Napoleon III Ebonized Convex Sorciere Mirror, 19th Century

A Napoleon III convex mirror, French, 19th century, the form known as a sorciere or witch's mirror, in its original molded and blackened wood frame of oval shuttle shape. The convex plate gathers the whole room into its silvery eye, the very quality that made these mirrors household talismans as much as furnishings. Small and potent, it punctuates a gallery wall, hangs above a desk or bedside, or holds its own on a narrow pier where a flat mirror would disappear. Convex mirrors are enjoying a deserved revival with designers, and original Napoleon III examples remain the ones to have. The frame and glass are in good condition, with wear consistent with age.
