A colorful oil on canvas of Notre Dame de Paris seen from the east, French School, circa 1960. The cathedral's apse and flying buttresses rise over a busy corner of the Left Bank, with lamp posts, awnings, strolling figures, and the rounded cars of the era filling the street below. The handling is naive and luminous, closer in spirit to the Sunday painters of Montmartre than to the academy, which is exactly its charm. Unsigned, as many of these joyful street pictures were. Views of the cathedral painted before the fire have taken on a documentary poignancy, and this one wears its era delightfully. The canvas is in good order, with wear consistent with age.
