On Hold - 19th Century French Carved Oak Two-Part Norman Buffet à Deux Corps
This impressive 19th-century French Norman buffet a deux corps is a beautifully handcrafted example of traditional provincial oak furniture. Constructed in solid oak as a two-piece cabinet, it presents an upper glazed display case over a spacious lower cupboard. The upper doors are framed by finely carved geometric moldings and scalloped arches and open to adjustable shelving for porcelain, glassware, or books, beneath a molded cornice crowned by a carved wheat sheaf, the traditional symbol of prosperity and abundance. The lower doors are centered with hand-carved oval medallions of pastoral scenes surrounded by geometric carving in the Norman tradition, above a gracefully scalloped apron on cabriole feet. Normandy was celebrated for its master carvers and robust oak furniture, and this buffet reflects that enduring quality. Equally suited to a dining room, kitchen, library, or entry hall, it presents beautifully, with age-appropriate wear and natural separations consistent with its age.
