Made in England in the twentieth century, this pair of table lamps is formed from reconstituted stone urns dating to the 1920s. Each lamp takes the form of a classical urn cast in reconstituted stone, a composite of aggregate and cement, later adapted for use as a lamp base. The urn form gives the lamps a substantial, architectural presence, and the stone surface carries the muted tone and texture associated with cast garden ornament of the period. As a matched pair, the lamps suit placement on a pair of console tables, side tables, or a mantel, providing symmetry and light. Their classical form and stone construction give them weight and decorative character, suiting both traditional and transitional interiors. Used either side of a sofa, bed, or hall table, the lamps combine a practical lighting function with the sculptural appeal of the classical urn, and their neutral surface integrates with a range of schemes.
