A pair of Italian Directoire nightstands in walnut, each with a frieze drawer above a paneled door framed in banding, raised on square tapered legs. The clean rectangular cases carry the Directoire gift for reduction, letting the figured walnut and neat proportions do the work, and the pair is properly matched, with doors and drawers in working order. True period pairs of nightstands are far scarcer than singles and solve the bedroom problem designers face most often: identical enclosed storage either side of a bed. Beyond bedside duty they serve as end tables or small cabinets in a sitting room or hall. Both are sound, with wear consistent with age and use.
