A pair of Italian commodes in lacquered fir, early 20th century, with softly aged grey-toned painted surfaces and finely reeded drawer fronts. Each chest carries its drawers between fluted corner posts beneath a molded top, with round pulls and gently tapered feet completing the restrained neoclassical composition. The lacquered finish has mellowed attractively, letting the character of the fir show through at the edges. True pairs of Italian painted commodes are increasingly difficult to source, and this set offers the symmetry designers prize: flanking a bed as generous nightstands, standing either side of a doorway, or anchoring a wall in a living room or entry. Sold as a pair, both pieces sound, with wear consistent with age.
