Made in Sweden in the nineteenth century, this pair of stools belongs to the Karl Johan period, the Swedish expression of the late neoclassical taste, and is fitted with carrying handles. The frames have been repainted in black, while the original webbing has been retained beneath, preserving an element of the early structure. Each stool carries an 'ABFS' brand mark. Compact and portable, stools of this type served as additional seating or as footstools and were easily moved between rooms. The black-painted surface gives a uniform, restrained appearance. As a matched pair, they suit placement before fireside chairs, at the end of a bench, or as occasional seating in a hall. Suited to both period and plainer modern interiors, the stools combine function with period character. As a pair of Karl Johan stools with handles, they offer portable seating together with the restrained neoclassical character of Swedish furniture.
