A pair of Swedish demi-lune consoles in black paint, 19th century, raised on curved cabriole legs, with the great virtue of the form: each half-moon stands independently against a wall, and the two join to make a complete round table when needed. That double life made demi-lunes the most practical furnishings of their era, flanking a doorway or fireplace one day and seating a card game or intimate supper the next. The black painted surfaces have worn gently with age, giving the pair a crisp, graphic presence against pale walls. True pairs are considerably scarcer than singles and correspondingly useful to designers. Both are sound, with wear consistent with age and use.
