A rare pair of period Swedish Gustavian chairs, signed by Carl Johan Wadström (active 1758–1816) and manufactured in Stockholm circa 1790. Wadström is a documented cabinetmaker of the Gustavian period, and signed seating from this era is increasingly scarce.
The chairs display the restrained neoclassical elegance characteristic of late Gustavian design, with straight backs, finely proportioned frames, and subtle carved detailing. The vertical back splats and clean architectural lines reflect strong French influence filtered through Swedish classicism.
The frames have been repainted in a soft grey tone at a later date, sympathetic to the period and enhancing the clarity of the form. The seats are later replacements, upholstered in a neutral fabric suitable for practical use while respecting the original proportions.
Structurally sound and visually cohesive, this signed pair represents authentic late 18th-century Swedish craftsmanship and is well suited for collectors or interiors seeking documented Gustavian furniture with historical significance.
