A beautifully cast bronze reduction of Paul Dubois’ celebrated Florentine Singer, originally modeled in 1865 and now housed in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris. This version bears the artist’s signature “P. DUBOIS,” the date “1865,” the foundry mark “F. BARBEDIENNE FONDEUR,” and the mechanical reduction stamp of Achille Collas—confirming its production by the most prestigious bronze foundry of the 19th century.
Dubois’ Florentine Singer earned the medal of honor at the 1865 Paris Salon and quickly became one of the defining sculptures of the period. Inspired by the grace of Donatello and Luca della Robbia, as well as Renaissance painters such as Piero della Francesca and Pinturicchio, Dubois created not a pastiche but a work that revives Renaissance vitality with a distinctly modern sensitivity.
The figure’s slight twist, the relaxed stance, and the finely modeled hands strumming the lute all radiate naturalism—the central aim of Renaissance artistic theory: art that feels alive. This reduction, with its rich brown patina and crisp casting, preserves the full elegance and spirit of Dubois’ original masterpiece.
