A French Régence walnut buffet, Lyon, circa 1720s. The rectangular top sits above a serpentine-front case fitted with two arched doors carved with panel ornament, the interiors revealing two shelves following the arched silhouette. Acanthus-leaf carving decorates the upper rail, serving as a prelude to the finely worked symmetrical pierced skirt below — an accomplished example of Régence ornamental carving at its most characteristic. The piece is raised on scrolled feet at the front and straight feet at the rear, a configuration typical of Lyon production. The Régence period, bridging the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV, produced furniture of exceptional quality in Lyon, where cabinetmakers combined the grandeur of the Sun King's era with the nascent lightness of the Rococo. The walnut patina is rich and well-developed. 49.75"W × 23.5"D × 36"H.
