Provincial Gustavian Armchair in Original Paint, circa 1780
A period provincial Gustavian armchair, Swedish, circa 1780, scraped to its original paint. The square back rises to an arched crest, the seat rail carries a band of carved guilloche decoration, and the whole rests on tapered, fluted legs, all in a softly worn grey with the chalky character that collectors of Swedish painted furniture prize. The chair retains its early under-upholstery, an honest survival ready to receive a top cover in the fabric of choice. Provincial Gustavian armchairs are considerably rarer than side chairs, and examples in first paint rarer still. It serves beautifully in a bedroom, study, or fireside setting where its surface rewards close viewing. Wear is consistent with 240 years of use.
