A period provincial Gustavian chair, Swedish, circa 1780, scraped to its original paint and newly covered in linen. The chair carries the clean neoclassical lines of the Gustavian style as interpreted in the Swedish countryside, plainer and more direct than Stockholm work, and increasingly sought for exactly that honesty. The painstaking process of dry-scraping has recovered the original 18th century painted surface, with the chalky, time-softened color that no modern finish can imitate. Fresh linen upholstery on the seat makes the chair immediately usable as an accent or desk chair. Period Gustavian seating in first paint is a cornerstone of the Swedish antiques market, and this is a characteristic, honest example. Wear is consistent with age.
