Set of Eight Swedish Chairs, circa 1840
A set of eight Swedish chairs, circa 1840, in black paint with upholstered seats in pale linen, a rare quantity of matched period seating from the Karl Johan era. The shaped crest rails and clean, restrained lines are characteristic of Swedish work from the period, and the dark frames read crisply against the light seats. Sets of eight allow a full dining room to be furnished with genuine 19th century chairs, uniform in design and mellowed together, something almost impossible to assemble from singles and pairs. With comfortable proportions suited to modern dining tables, they pair with tables antique or contemporary, formal or farmhouse. All eight are sound and serviceable, with wear consistent with age.
