An Italian altar candlestick in silver-plated copper, 18th century, an object of imposing scale. The baluster stem rises through knopped and fluted sections from a tripod base with scrolled feet and a central cartouche, finishing in a wide gadrooned drip pan, the full Baroque vocabulary rendered in patinated silvered metal that has mellowed to a soft pewter tone. Candlesticks of this scale were made for church and chapel use, and they bring the same gravity to a domestic setting: on a mantel, anchoring a console vignette, or as a sculptural presence on a dining table or in a bookcase. An authentic, atmospheric object with wear to the silvering consistent with age.
