Swedish 19th Century Empire Wall Sconce
Made in Sweden around 1820, this Empire wall sconce retains its original surface. The Empire style, drawn from classical antiquity and fashionable across Europe in the early nineteenth century, is expressed here through architectural form and restrained ornament. As a wall sconce, the piece was designed to hold candles and to project light from the wall, combining a practical lighting function with a decorative presence. The retained original surface shows the patina and wear of its age, valued in period Swedish pieces for the authenticity it brings.
