Made in Sweden around 1820, this Empire wall sconce retains its original surface. The Empire style, drawn from classical antiquity and fashionable across Europe in the early nineteenth century, is expressed here through architectural form and restrained ornament. As a wall sconce, the piece was designed to hold candles and to project light from the wall, combining a practical lighting function with a decorative presence. The retained original surface shows the patina and wear of its age, valued in period Swedish pieces for the authenticity it brings. Mounted on a wall in a hall, dining room, or reception room, the sconce adds a vertical decorative accent and, historically, a source of candlelight. Its early nineteenth-century character suits both period interiors and plainer settings where a single antique element is wanted, and it can be displayed singly or as part of a wall arrangement.
