A Swedish Baroque painted buffet, circa 1740s. The rectangular top with beveled edges sits above a shallow pull-out drawer, with two doors below carved with panels presenting molded geometric accents — a bold, rectilinear decorative vocabulary characteristic of Swedish Baroque furniture, which drew on Northern European Baroque sources while retaining a distinctly Scandinavian directness of execution. The side posts flanking the doors echo the geometric door carving. The sides are plain; the back unfinished. The piece is raised on four bun feet, the turned ball foot being a hallmark of Baroque Scandinavian furniture. The soft painted finish has developed an authentically weathered appearance through nearly three centuries of use. An honest and characterful example of Swedish mid-eighteenth-century painted provincial furniture. 48"W × 25.5"D × 34.5"H.
