A Swedish pedestal table in black paint, 19th century, its round top raised on a turned baluster stem above three gracefully curved legs. The intimate wine table form is one of the most useful in the antique repertoire, slipping in beside an armchair or sofa, holding a lamp in a hallway, or serving drinks on legs that take up almost no floor. The dark painted surface has softened with age to an even, gently worn tone that reads as crisply in a contemporary room as in a period one. Small Swedish tables of this charm disappear quickly, and the sculptural tripod base rewards viewing from every angle. Wear is consistent with age and use.
