One chair, dating from 1770, is signed by Ephraim Ståhl; the other dates from approximately 1850.
Ephraim Ståhl (November 22, 1768–May 10, 1820) was a prominent Stockholm chairmaker who served as master of the Chairmakers’ Guild from 1794 until his death.
Ståhl worked during the reigns of Gustav IV Adolf and Karl XIII, and into the reign of Karl XIV Johan. The Swedish Royal Household commissioned numerous chairs from his workshop. Examples of his furniture can be found at Stockholm Palace, Gripsholm Castle, Tullgarn Palace, Rosersberg Palace, and the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
Distinctive features of Ståhl’s work include chair legs terminating in carved goat hooves, lion paws, or swan beaks.
