A Viennese sideboard in fir with a warm grey lacquered finish, circa 1790, its two doors set with cream-painted panels within molded frames, raised on bun feet. The soft two-tone scheme has mellowed beautifully, giving the piece the powdery, aged elegance that painted Continental furniture is prized for, and the door retains its original finely chased lock, a small masterpiece of period metalwork. At five feet wide with generous cupboard storage, it serves a dining room, hallway, or bedroom equally well, its pale surface brightening the wall it stands against. Eighteenth century painted sideboards in this state of preservation are increasingly hard to find. The doors close properly, with wear consistent with age and use.
