Made in England around 1720, this carved oak coffer has been stripped and bleached, giving it a pale, light surface unusual for early oak. The coffer, a traditional storage chest, was used for textiles and household goods, and carved examples are valued for their decorative fronts. Stripping and bleaching the oak has lightened the timber from its usual dark tone, producing a paler surface that suits contemporary as well as traditional interiors. The carving gives the front decorative interest. Suited to placement at the foot of a bed, in a hall, or against a wall in a living room, the coffer provides generous storage while serving as a decorative object and a surface for display on its lid. Its early eighteenth-century date and carved construction give it strong period character, while the bleached finish offers a lighter, more adaptable appearance than typical aged oak.
