A French Rococo Revival walnut planter, 1890s. The square body is carved with rocailles motifs — the asymmetric shell and scroll ornament central to the Rococo vocabulary — enclosing a fitted tin liner. Cabriole legs provide an elegant, curved support, while delicately carved floral motifs add a further note of naturalistic ornament. The Rococo Revival, which swept French decorative arts from the mid-nineteenth century onward, drew directly from the exuberant aesthetic of the Louis XV period, translating its forms into household objects ranging from furniture to garden accessories. The walnut has developed a warm, aged patina. A refined and fully functional interior planter in the grand French decorative tradition.
