French 20th Century Decorative Moleskin Horse Sculpture with Dark Embossed Saddle and Star Hardware in Rearing Pose
Of the five decorative moleskin horses fashioned in the French tradition, this cream white example stands apart through the dramatic contrast of its dark navy embossed saddle cloth, its surface worked in a subtle relief of floral and foliate motifs, against the pristine pallor of the body. The bridle and harness straps are crafted from dark leather, each junction adorned with small gold star-shaped rosettes, and a multicolored braided mane threaded with ribbon accents adds a final note of festive artisanship. Edged throughout with careful green stitching, the horse assumes a rearing stance full of frozen animation, forelegs lifted, chest forward, in a gesture of theatrical bravado. It stands on a dark wood base with gold stud detailing. A superb example of the French artisan tradition of miniature equestrian sculpture, it pairs beautifully with its cream-colored counterparts, whether displayed as a set or as an individual accent, with wear consistent with age.
