Pair of Italian Empire Walnut Commodes, Trieste, circa 1800
A pair of Triestine chests of drawers from the very early 1800s, made of walnut in the transitional taste between Louis XVI and Empire. The tapered legs place them at that hinge moment between the two styles, while the gilded wooden figures serving as capitals on the tapered columns set them apart from typical models. Their compact width makes them unusually versatile for a matched pair: flanking a bed, standing either side of a doorway, or anchoring both ends of a room. The warm walnut carries an even aged patina, and both cases are sound with properly running drawers. True Empire-period pairs are increasingly difficult to find, and wear is consistent with age and use.
