A pair of Swedish commodes, circa 1860, offering the rare luxury of matched case pieces. True pairs of 19th century commodes are far scarcer than singles and solve elegant problems in furnishing: flanking a bed as generous nightstands, standing symmetrically either side of a doorway or fireplace, or anchoring both ends of a long hallway. Each commode is a practical 33 inches wide with drawers providing real storage. The pair displays the restrained proportions and softly aged surfaces characteristic of Swedish work from the period, adaptable to Gustavian, country, and contemporary schemes alike, and their moderate height keeps sightlines open.
