Swedish 19th Century Gustavian Stool
Made in Sweden around 1810, this Gustavian stool shows the restrained neoclassical character of the style. The Gustavian style, the Swedish interpretation of neoclassicism, is expressed in the measured proportions and form of the stool. Compact and portable, stools of this kind served as additional seating or as footstools and were easily moved about the home. The frame carries the painted or aged surface valued in Swedish period furniture.
