Made in Sweden in the nineteenth century, this stool belongs to the Karl Johan period, the Swedish expression of the late neoclassical taste, and is fitted with carrying handles. The frame has been repainted in black, while the original webbing has been retained beneath, preserving part of the early structure, and the stool carries an 'ABFS' brand mark. Compact and portable, stools of this type served as additional seating or as footstools, easily moved between rooms. The black-painted surface gives a clean, uniform appearance. As a single stool, it suits use before a fireside chair, at the end of a bench, or as a footstool or occasional seat in a hall or sitting room. Suited to both period and plainer modern interiors, the stool combines function with period character. As a Karl Johan stool with handles, it offers portable seating together with the restrained neoclassical character of Swedish furniture.
